Stryker invests $400m in CMR Surgical
US medical technology giant Stryker has entered into a strategic alliance with the British robotics pioneer CMR Surgical, investing around $400m.
The deal involves a preferred equity investment that provides Stryker with an exclusive option to acquire 100 per cent of the Cambridge based company in the future.
For investors, the transaction marks Stryker’s long awaited entry into the high growth soft tissue robotics market, an area the company has evaluated for several years as an adjacency to its existing endoscopy and visualisation businesses.
Under the terms of the agreement, Stryker will serve as the exclusive sales agent for CMR Surgical’s Versius robotic portfolio within the United States. Meanwhile, CMR Surgical will continue to lead product development and commercialisation efforts in all markets outside the United States. This structure allows Stryker to leverage its deep hospital relationships and commercial scale to drive adoption of the Versius system in American healthcare facilities. The investment is expected to support further innovation for the Versius platform, which has already been used in over 45,000 surgical procedures globally.
For healthcare operators, the move is significant due to the modular and portable architecture of the Versius robot. Unlike larger, stationary systems, Versius is designed to fit into existing operating room workflows without requiring dedicated surgical suites.
This flexibility is particularly attractive for ambulatory surgery centres, a segment where Stryker already maintains a dominant presence through its Mako orthopedic platform.
