Siemens Healthineers exits general ultrasound market

16 October 2026

Siemens Healthineers is to completely exit the highly competitive general-purpose ultrasound market.

The strategic shift is part of a broader corporate realignment designed to optimise the Germany-based imaging giant’s product portfolio, protect operating margins, and concentrate resources on high-growth, high-value clinical applications. General-purpose ultrasound systems have faced severe pricing pressure and market stagnation in recent years, particularly in China and other emerging markets, prompting the company to seek more profitable avenues for its advanced technology.

Under the new plan, Siemens Healthineers will redirect its engineering and commercial resources away from standard diagnostic imaging carts and toward specialised, high-margin interventional and intraoperative ultrasound systems. These specialised systems are increasingly used to guide complex procedures in cardiovascular surgery, interventional radiology, and minimally invasive oncology. By focusing on clinically integrated imaging solutions that assist surgeons in real-time, the company aims to embed its technology deeply into surgical workflows, which command higher pricing power and face fewer low-cost competitors.

This pivot also aligns with the broader industry migration of complex surgical procedures toward ambulatory care clinics and specialised clinical centres.

For healthcare operators and investors, this strategic exit underscores the growing necessity of portfolio discipline among major MedTech conglomerates. Large diversified players are increasingly shedding standard, commoditised lines to insulate themselves from pricing pressures and to focus capital on areas with stronger competitive barriers.

The move allows Siemens Healthineers to protect its overall imaging margins while positioning itself as a premium provider of specialised surgical guidance tools.
