Novo Nordisk partners with OpenAI on drug development

14 April 2026

Danish global healthcare company Novo Nordisk has announced a significant strategic partnership with AI research and deployment company OpenAI.

The agreement marks a major step in the pharmaceutical giant’s efforts to integrate advanced artificial intelligence across its global value chain.

According to its announcement on April 14, the maker of popular medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy intends to apply OpenAI’s most sophisticated capabilities to analyse complex datasets and identify promising drug candidates more efficiently than traditional methods allow. This initiative is expected to reduce the time required to move from initial research to patient delivery – a critical metric for both operational efficiency and investor returns.

Mike Doustdar, the president and chief executive of Novo Nordisk, says that the partnership is an essential step in leading the next era of healthcare, noting that millions of people living with obesity and diabetes require better treatment options and that AI enables the company to identify patterns and test hypotheses at a scale that was previously impossible.

Beyond drug discovery, the integration will extend to manufacturing, supply chain management, and commercial operations. Pilot programmes are scheduled to launch immediately across these departments, with the goal of achieving full integration by the end of 2026.

The partnership also includes a robust focus on human capital. OpenAI will assist in upskilling Novo Nordisk’s global workforce to enhance AI literacy, ensuring that talent can work smarter and move faster in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, says that this collaboration will help redefine the future of patient care by running smarter global operations and accelerating scientific breakthroughs.
