Novo Nordisk agrees weight loss price drop with US Administration
Denmark-based global chronic disease specialist Novo Nordisk has announced an agreement with the U.S. Administration to lower Wegovy and Ozempic prices across Medicare Part D, Medicaid and cash channels starting 2026.
In exchange, Medicare will pilot obesity-drug coverage and the company gains a three-year tariff exemption. Management pegs the change at a low-single-digit drag on 2026 global sales growth but views broader affordability as pivotal for long-run volume expansion and political risk mitigation. Importantly, the pricing reset will coincide with a maturing supply chain and potential label expansions, partially offsetting headline revenue pressure.
Novo Nordisk management has also this month reiterated that the pending Akero Therapeutics acquisition will secure efruxifermin , a potential first-in-class therapy for F4-stage MASH (formerly NASH – a fatty liver disease), highlighting that roughly DKK 9bn of one-off restructuring charges booked year-to-date have already unlocked operational efficiencies, freeing resources to fund growth assets such as Akero’s late-stage programme without straining the balance sheet. It added that with no marketed pharmacotherapy for decompensated cirrhosis, the addressable population could rival GLP-1 obesity in unmet-need terms, positioning Novo for a fresh therapeutic pillar as diabetes GLP-1 growth rates normalise.
In governance news, at the Extraordinary General Meeting on November 14, long-time chair Helge Lund and six directors stepped down, making way for Lars Rebien Sørensen (chair) and Cees de Jong (vice-chair), alongside two new independent members. Sørensen – also chair of the Novo Nordisk Foundation -pledged support for management’s transformation agenda while committing to minority-shareholder dialogue, signalling tighter board alignment with the revamped strategic priorities.
Taken together, the pipeline-fortifying Akero deal, volume-seeking U.S. price accord and governance reset suggest Novo Nordisk is proactively managing its growth, access and oversight levers ahead of an increasingly competitive obesity and metabolic landscape.
