Merck signs $2.1bn SciBrunch Oncology Deal
Multinational biopharmaceutical company Merck has entered into an exclusive global licensing agreement with Chinese biotechnology firm SciBrunch Therapeutics for the development and commercialisation of SPR2015.
SPR2015 is an investigational, preclinical, oral molecular glue inhibitor specifically engineered to target a mutation which is one of the most prevalent genetic alterations across major malignancies, including pancreatic, colorectal, and non small cell lung cancers.
For investors and operators, the financial framework of the deal underscores a high conviction in the asset’s early stage potential.
Under the terms of the agreement, Merck provided an upfront payment of $400m and committed to additional milestone payments that could bring the total aggregate value of the transaction to $2.13bn. These milestones are tied to the achievement of specific development, regulatory, and commercial goals across multiple therapeutic indications.
The scientific rationale for acquiring SPR2015 centres on its ability to complement Merck’s existing oncology pipeline. Management has indicated that this move is part of a strategy to diversify their precision targeting pillar, which aims to impact pathways driving cancer growth through both monotherapy and combination approaches.
