Medtronic acquiring SPR Therapeutics in $650m deal
Global healthcare technology and biomedical engineering company Medtronic is acquiring SPR Therapeutics, a medical technology company specialising in percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation for chronic pain management.
The transaction involves an upfront cash payment of approximately $650m for all outstanding equity. Expected to close in the first half of Medtronic’s fiscal year 2027, the deal reflects an ongoing commitment to building core franchises through targeted investments.
The centrepiece is the FDA-cleared SPRINT PNS System, which delivers a 60-day therapy providing sustained pain relief without a permanent implant. This technology complements Medtronic’s existing neuromodulation portfolio, enabling minimally invasive interventions much earlier in the patient care continuum. Real-world data from over 6,100 patients indicates that more than 71 percent of participants experienced significant pain relief or quality of life improvements after the temporary treatment.
The deal marks another tuck-in deal for Medtronic, and looks to be a strategic shift toward near-term revenue opportunities.
The acquisition leverages Medtronic’s vast global commercial infrastructure to scale a growing franchise. By integrating a temporary treatment approach, Medtronic is well positioned to address a broader segment of patients seeking non-opioid, less invasive therapies.
