Medtronic acquires Scientia Vascular to boost neurovascular portfolio

10 March 2026

Listed American-Irish medical device company Medtronic has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Scientia Vascular, a privately held specialist in neurovascular access technology, for an upfront payment of $550m.

The transaction also includes potential undisclosed earn-out and milestone payments following the completion of the deal. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Scientia employs approximately 310 people and is known for its proprietary microfabrication manufacturing process. This technology produces guidewires and catheters with softer tips designed to reduce the risk of vessel perforation and improve procedural safety for physicians.

The acquisition is a strategic move to bolster Medtronic’s position within the high growth neurovascular market, which addresses both haemorrhagic and acute ischaemic stroke.

Scientia’s portfolio, including its Aristotle guidewires and Socrates aspiration catheters, will be integrated into Medtronic’s Neurovascular business. This business sits within the broader Neuroscience Portfolio and currently generates approximately $3bn in annual revenue. By marrying Scientia’s access products with its own therapeutic devices, Medtronic aims to offer a full suite of solutions across the entire procedural workflow.

For investors, the deal represents a continuation of Medtronic’s focus on high growth tuck in acquisitions rather than large scale mergers. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of Medtronic’s fiscal year 2027.

This acquisition follows other recent portfolio moves, such as the acquisition of CathWorks, as Medtronic seeks to accelerate organic growth through targeted technology investments.
