Gimv discontinuing new investments in life sciences platform
European investment firm Gimv announced a significant strategic pivot on Monday, January 26, declaring it will discontinue all new investments in its life sciences platform.
This decision marks a shift in focus toward four core investment pillars: consumer, healthcare, smart industries, and sustainable cities, where the firm identifies significant growth opportunities linked to the digital transition.
For healthcare operators and investors, this move signals a tactical retreat from early-stage biotech and medtech venture capital in favour of broader healthcare services. The existing life sciences portfolio, which comprises 11 companies and represents approximately 5% of Gimv’s total portfolio value will not be liquidated immediately. Instead, these assets will be managed to maximize value in consultation with syndicate investors, though the firm’s executive committee will be restructured to reflect the new strategy.
The timing of the announcement is particularly notable given Gimv’s recent activity in the sector:
In October 2025, the firm realized a successful exit of Marseille-based French biotechnology company Imcheck Therapeutics to global French biopharma company Ipsen, achieving a 2.6x money multiple.
As recently as January 2026, Gimv participated in a $103 million Series B for Boston-based, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company Kinaset Therapeutics.
In late 2024, it led a $92 million Series A for San Francisco-based biotechnology company Kivu Bioscience and a €51m Series B for Germany-based, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company Exciva.
Despite these milestones, the board’s decision to halt new life sciences deployments suggests a preference for the lower-risk, scalable profiles found in its healthcare platform, which recently added companies like Ambulantis and Novicare. Investors should watch for the upcoming February 19, 2026 earnings report for further details on the transition and the fate of the specialized life sciences investment team.
