Boston Scientific acquiring Penumbra in $14.5bn deal

9 February 2026

Boston Scientific Corporation has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Penumbra in a transaction valued at approximately $14.5bn.

The American biotechnology and biomedical engineering firm and multinational manufacturer of medical devices announced it was buying California-based medical device company Penumbra on January 15.

For operators and investors, the deal represents a significant pivot for Boston Scientific as it seeks to regain leadership in the neurovascular and mechanical thrombectomy markets, which are projected to grow at low single digits.

The merger combines Boston Scientific’s global scale with Penumbra’s innovation engine, particularly in vascular disease treatments. Penumbra CEO Adam Elsesser is slated to join Boston Scientific’s board of directors upon the deal’s completion.

This acquisition marks a major consolidation in the medical device sector, prioritising specialised, high-margin technologies over standalone growth.
