US-based CDMO Alcami Corporation has acquired Tjoapack, global contract packaging organisation specialising in primary and secondary packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. The deal represents a significant consolidation within the pharmaceutical services sector.

This transaction also marks the first European expansion for the North Carolina based group. By integrating Tjoapack, Alcami is establishing a transatlantic platform that addresses the increasing demand for supply chain redundancy. The combined organisation will manage more than one million square feet of operational space and employ over 1,400 personnel across its sites in the United States and the Netherlands.

For healthcare investors, the deal illustrates a broader trend of private equity backed entities seeking integrated global solutions. Alcami, which is owned by GHO Capital and The Vistria Group, utilised the legal services of Ropes and Gray to finalise the purchase from Ampersand Capital Partners. Ampersand had originally invested in the Netherlands headquartered Tjoapack in 2020, overseeing its growth from a regional player into a global contract packaging organisation with 23 production lines.

Operators within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors stand to benefit from the expanded service portfolio. The integration will allow customers to access drug product manufacturing, laboratory services, and pharmaceutical storage alongside specialised packaging and labelling under a single supplier agreement. Furthermore, the addition of European Qualified Person release services facilitates smoother market access for American firms looking to distribute products within the European Union.

This strategic move aligns with the industry shift toward reducing supplier hand offs and enhancing the security of the global medicine supply chain.
