Ferring Pharmaceuticals acquiring Gameto for up to $1.38bn

28 October 2026

Swiss pharmaceutical group Ferring Pharmaceuticals has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire New York-based biotechnology company Gameto in a transaction valued at up to $1.38bn.

The acquisition represents a major strategic expansion for Ferring in its core therapeutic area of reproductive medicine and maternal health.

The transaction features a structured payment system that includes an upfront payment alongside substantial contingent milestone payments tied to the clinical development, regulatory approval, and commercialisation of Gameto’s leading pipeline asset. Gameto has developed a pioneering cell-based platform designed to reform the process of in vitro fertilisation and egg freezing. Its proprietary technology, Fertilo, utilises human engineered ovarian support cells to mature eggs in vitro, which could significantly reduce the duration and dosage of hormone injections typically required by patients undergoing fertility treatments.

By acquiring Gameto, Ferring gains full ownership of this novel cell-based platform, which aims to make the IVF experience shorter, safer, and less physically demanding for women. Ferring’s existing fertility portfolio, which includes widely used hormone therapies and endometrial treatments, should be highly complementary to Gameto’s technology. The integration of Fertilo is expected to provide clinics with a more holistic and patient-friendly suite of options, driving clinical adoption in both Europe and the United States.

The transaction represents one of the largest biotechnology acquisitions in the fertility sector in recent years, highlighting the robust appetite among specialty pharmaceutical companies for innovative private biotech targets with the potential to transform existing standards of care.
