San Donato plans expansion in Italy and Kenya
Leading Italian private hospital group San Donato Group has made plans for substantial outpatient expansion across Italy, and signed a letter of intent with Kenya’s Ministry of Health for a massive healthcare infrastructure project overseas.
The group has opened its first Smart Clinic in Genoa, marking a new chapter for the brand outside its traditional Lombardy stronghold. These clinics are developed through a joint venture with Italian insurance company Generali Italia, in which San Donato holds a 51 per cent stake and Italian private joint venture company GKSD holds 9 per cent.
The Genoa facility serves as the vanguard for a wider plan to establish a network of approximately 100 outpatient clinics across Italy by 2030. From an operational perspective, the Smart Clinic model focuses on high volume diagnostics, specialist visits, and preventative care designed to reduce waiting times and improve accessibility for private and insured patients.
Meanwhile the Kenyan agreement, valued at approximately €380m outlines a comprehensive programme aimed at strengthening the African nation’s medical capabilities. At the heart of this partnership is the construction of 15 new hospital facilities across various Kenyan counties.
For investors and healthcare operators, this deal signals the group’s growing appetite for large scale infrastructure projects that leverage Italian clinical and technical expertise in emerging markets.
The partnership builds upon a collaborative foundation first established in 2021 when the group signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance telemedicine and develop modern hospitals in Kenya. Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative is expected to involve academic support from the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, further integrating clinical research and education into the regional healthcare ecosystem.
