UK the first European market to launch oral Wegovy

6 July 2026

The United Kingdom has become the first European market to commence the commercial rollout of oral Wegovy.

Following authorisation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on June 11, 2026, private healthcare providers began dispensing the once daily semaglutide tablet on July 6.

The launch introduces a needle free alternative to the dominant injectable GLP-1 therapies, specifically targeting the estimated 30% of UK adults living with obesity who may have previously deferred treatment due to a reluctance to self inject.

Strategic distribution is currently concentrated within the private sector as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence continues its cost effectiveness appraisal for potential NHS adoption.

Major retail and digital health platforms including Boots, SheMed, and Get A Drip have initiated patient access through structured weight management programmes. These providers are utilising tiered pricing models to manage the titration schedule required for the therapy.

Female focused healthtech platform SheMed has priced the initial month at £69, with subsequent monthly costs rising from £154 for the 1.5 mg starter dose to £269 for the 25 mg maintenance strength.

For investors and operators, the UK launch serves as a critical indicator of European demand for oral obesity formulations.

Novo Nordisk has reported that more than three million prescriptions were dispensed in the US since its January launch, with approximately 80% of those patients being new to GLP-1 therapy. This suggests the oral format is successfully expanding the total addressable market rather than merely cannibalising existing injectable sales.

While the pill requires strict administration on an empty stomach with minimal water, the removal of cold chain storage requirements offers logistical advantages for both providers and patients. With Eli Lilly yet to file for European approval of its rival oral candidate, Foundayo, Novo Nordisk currently holds a first mover advantage in the European oral obesity market.
