European medical technology manufacturers Philips has just issued an urgent field safety notice to address potential clinical risks within its installed bases.

On June 1, Philips notified customers about a manufacturing defect affecting its “Avalon Fetal Monitors” (FM20 and FM30) models used during antepartum testing and labour. Speaker assembly cable contacts were inserted rotated 180 degrees relative to their specified orientation, causing a locking failure.

This error increases the risk that cables could be pulled out of the housing, resulting in intermittent or permanent loss of audio output. If audio loss goes unnoticed, clinicians might miss changes in a patient’s condition, potentially causing a delay in treatment that could lead to severe harm or death.

Operators are instructed to ensure fetal heart rate tones remain enabled until a permanent correction is implemented. For investors, this notice arrives as market analysts observe that Philips is heavily relying on its robust patient monitoring division to maintain market share, especially following the massive Respironics product recall. Industry experts note that while the company faces competitive pressure in large imaging equipment, its footprint in patient monitoring remains a critical defensive stronghold.

Separately, Swedish radiotherapy specialist Elekta issued a medical device correction on May 19 for its MOSAIQ oncology information system (versions 3.2.1.0 to 3.2.3.2) in conjunction with the Unity treatment delivery platform. Elekta warned that the software may fail to load an adapted baseline shift plan during treatment delivery if a communication error occurs during the send process.

To mitigate risks, operators must manually verify that the timestamp for the last field edit matches the transfer time before proceeding with radiation therapy. The company is currently developing a software fix to reduce these time lapse errors, which will be distributed via a field change order.
