Doctolib Acquires Medicus Health

6 May 2026

Leading European e-health company Doctolib has completed the acquisition of Medicus Health Ltd, marking a significant development in the UK primary care technology sector.

The transaction in May 2026 involves a complete buyout of the NHS GP technology supplier. The move gives the French buyer an immediate foothold in a market historically dominated by Optum and TPP.

By acquiring a nationally assured platform, Doctolib bypasses the steep regulatory and integration barriers that typically protect incumbent legacy suppliers.

Medicus gained considerable attention in 2025 when it became the first new GP clinical system in approximately twenty-five years to achieve NHS validation and national integration approval. Doctolib is expected to pair this NHS-native platform with its own artificial intelligence capabilities and workflow software, drawing on its extensive experience supporting over forty thousand general practitioners across Europe.

Medicus founder and chief executive Emile Axelrad will continue to lead the existing UK-based team.

Stanislas Niox-Chateau, co-founder and CEO of Doctolib, said: “Medicus has built an impressive product and team for UK general practices. By joining forces, we are becoming one team with one ambition: give GP practices in the UK the best technology, AI and services to simplify work, improve coordination and help professionals spend more time caring for patients. We are making a long-term commitment to the UK. We plan to invest more than £100 million in the UK over the coming years, hire 150 people in London, establish a dedicated R&D center, and bring the full power of our expertise, including our AI clinical lab, to support innovation in NHS primary care.”

The acquisition aligns with broader shifts in European healthcare technology, where operators are increasingly looking to vertically integrated platforms that combine patient engagement with administrative automation. NHS England has actively encouraged market diversification to reduce reliance on a small number of dominant legacy systems, presenting a clear opportunity for well capitalised entrants.
