The UK Competition and Markets Authority has formally launched a comprehensive market study into the £8bn private dentistry sector.

Announced in early March 2026, the review was triggered by surging consumer demand, difficulties accessing National Health Service treatments, and steep price inflation.

For operators and dental insurers, the probe signals a critical period of assessment regarding pricing models, patient transparency, and market consolidation. The competition watchdog noted that one in five people in Great Britain relied on private dental care in 2024. Over a two-year period, the average cost of an initial consultation climbed twenty-three per cent to £80, while routine check-ups rose fourteen per cent to £55. Following concerns raised by Chancellor Rachel Reeves over hidden costs and potential overtreatment, the authority will examine whether the market is functioning fairly for consumers.

The investigation will cover preventative, clinically necessary, and cosmetic treatments. Regulators are specifically evaluating how practices compete to attract and retain patients, the ease with which consumers can switch providers, and whether corporate conduct limits choice. Legal analysts highlight that the review aligns with a broader regulatory crackdown on buy-and-build serial acquisitions by private equity in consumer-facing healthcare sectors, echoing recent interventions in the veterinary and care home markets.

The authority will spend the next six months gathering evidence from consumers, dental professionals, investors, and insurance providers to build a picture of local competitive dynamics. A consultation on emerging thinking and potential remedies is slated for autumn 2026, with a final report due by March 2027.
